WATCH: A Wave of Prayer Is Emerging (1.14 min)

BACKGROUND:

Continuous prayer is NOT new. Around 1400 BC, God commanded the high priests to keep the fire on the altar going day and night (Leviticus 6:13 … Oh!!!! … See the “coincidence” … Sept 6-13, 2026 ). The priests took turns praying and keeping the fire going, for centuries… until Jesus underwent the perfect sacrifice on the cross… and burnt offerings/continuous fires were no longer needed. Jesus’ disciples were in the Upper Room praying continuously when Pentecost burst forth and the Church was born! St Anthony (300 AD), took Matt 19:21 seriously, sold everything, gave to the poor, and became a desert hermit who established a monastery that took on praying 24-7-365 for 20 years. This set the groundwork for the monastic movement and 24-7 prayer in many parts of the world for many centuries. Then in 1727, the Moravian Pentecost ignited Christian exiles living in a small German village of Herrnhut, to engage in 24-7-365 continuous prayer that lasted for 100 years!!! Finally, in 1999, a plan to start a 24-7 prayer group in England for one month emerged, and due to its overwhelming enthusiasm and success… never shut down; it “accidently” morphed into a continuous 24-7-365 prayer group that has been going on now for 26 years… and still is going strong. Pete Grieg, the “unintentional” founder, has stated that it was the “wildest ride of our lives”. Within the first year, the group formalized into the international “24-7 Prayer” organization that has facilitated and mentored thousands of prayer rooms throughout the world… some in the most unexpected areas (streets of Izibu, the European bohemian party island). See Pete’s book, Red Moon Rising for the amazing history of this movement. 24-7 Prayer leaders recently organized the Global Week of Prayer 2025 and due to its unprecedented success… have launched the second Global Week of Prayer adventure this September. Given the international challenges and events of 2026… what could be better than people from all nations raising their minds, voices, and hearts in unified prayer for peace in our communities, our cities, and our nations.

As directed by our host, 24-7 Prayer, prayer will be Jesus Christ centered and focused on Philippians 2:9-11 and interdenominational. Everyone is welcome to participate.

WHAT IS A PRAYER ROOM?

A 24-7 Prayer Room is a beautiful, serene prayer space, engaging all of the senses in a creative way that enables a chain of unbroken day and night prayer, bringing friends, communities and churches together to seek the presence of God.

WHEN?

Throughout the world, people of all nations and languages will engage in prayer from noon on September 6 to noon on September 13th, 2026.

The San Antonio Prayer Room will be structured as follows:

Sunday September 6th: 10 AM Mass/Ecumenical Service to initiate the week. 11 AM Brunch. 12 noon - first hour of private prayer begins in small private Prayer Room.

Ongoing one-hour increments of prayer will occur throughout the day and night, all week long… at least one person is needed for each hour. More are welcome, but at least one committed “pray-er” who will accept the prayer baton is critical for every hour… including the most challenging late night and early morning hours.

Sunday, September 13th: 11 AM Ecumenical Prayer Service to engage the entire community in prayer for the last hour and to celebrate the week with lunch afterwards.

WHERE?

Our Prayer Room will be sponsored by the San Antonio Catholic Worker House community located on the campus of Towne Twin Village at 4711 Dietrich Road. Our Prayer Room will be in the “East” hospice apartment, located in Building 9 (the large blue clinic building, next to the green CWH building). The Prayer Room will be decorated and feature various prayer stations to promote a creative prayerful environment. Since prayer is a lifting up of our hearts, minds, and souls to God in a variety of ways, we will provide prayer books and images, music, blank group journals and pens, individual journals, art space and supplies, to foster an inspiring place where visitors can pray contemplatively, vocally, sing, draw, paint, write poetry, etc. Additionally, refreshments and a space for socializing and debriefing will be available in the Hospitality Room in the next door “West” hospice apartment.

HOW?

One-hour prayer slots are available on the hour, every hour for 7 days from Sunday September 6th at 12 noon … non-stop … until Sunday September 13th at 12 noon.
