How We Operate

We divide work into two broad categories: day-to-day operations and long-term planning. The day-to-day operations (soupline and the family shelter) are handled entirely by the resident volunteers, while the long-term planning (such as renovations to the houses) is handled by our advisory board.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, we open to soupline guests at 8:30 in the morning. Various pastries and breakfast foods are set out in the common areas and coffee is provided so that our guests can start their day out right. We also have a washing machine and dryer that the guests can use to wash their clothes while they hang out and wait for the main meal to be prepared.

At 11:00 the volunteers eat, and then at 11:30 we all pray and then lunch is served. We close at 1:00 in the afternoon. At all other times our primary purpose is that of offering hospitality to homeless families. Our emphasis on personalism means that we try to make the Catholic Worker Community something other than a free hotel for the families. Every weeknight at 6:00 we share a meal with the families and once a week we hold meetings in which we set goals with the families.
